Breast Unit

The Breast Unit offers comprehensive breast care to a population of around 500,000. The service includes provision of symptomatic work and the National Breast Screening Programme.

Our symptomatic service provides a 'one stop' clinic wherever possible, meaning patients can receive their initial consultation with clinical evaluation, breast imaging and histological assessment when referred from the GP surgery for investigation. We also provide routine family history clinics. We off a full breast oncoplastic/reconstructive service including cosmetic breast services. The unit is recognised as a centre for Level 2 training in oncoplastic breast surgery. A full range of oncoplastic reconstruction options are available to patients either as an immediate or delayed procedure. All patients needing breast surgery will be allocated a bed on either Women's Health Ward or Day Treatment Unit.

Patients are also invited for three yearly screening through the National Breast Screening Programme.

The Breast Unit works alongside the Oncology Service, Diagnostic Imaging and the theatre booking team, to provide widespread support from referral, the diagnostic process, treatment and follow up. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are administered at Peterborough City Hospital and we have a very high participation rate in various clinical trials. There is also a well-established Breast MRI service in Diagnostic Imaging.

Contact us

Our purpose built unit delivers a 'one-stop' service where women who are referred to us can be assessed and attend an imaging appointment on the same day.

We provide three-yearly breast screening appointments for women who live in and around Peterborough, who are aged between 50 and 70.

We have a mobile breast screening unit that travels to Whittlesey, Yaxley, Stamford, Market Deeping, Bourne and Chatteris, so that women can attend breast screening without having to travel to Peterborough City Hospital.

We also run routine family history clinics where women who are concerned about breast cancer in their family can be assessed for risk.
