Who we are?

The Community Macmillan Clinical nurse specialists are qualified registered nurses who have undertaken extensive specialised training, enabling them to meet the needs of cancer patients.

The aim of the service is to provide the best possible quality of home care for cancer patients and their families utilising a holistic approach offering advice, information and emotional support by discussion, counselling and education.

Macmillan Nurses work closely with GPs, district nurses and other health care professionals as part of a multi-professional team.

Macmillan nurse-led outreach clinics are held at various locations including Oundle Surgery and Doddington Hospital. Appointments are arranged at the time of referral to the service.

Macmillan nurses may visit a patient only once or on a number of occasions to assess pain control, symptom control or particular anxieties. The length of a Macmillan nurse's involvement will vary according to individual need and will be agreed by all concerned in the care of the patient.  Discharges from the service are made following a satisfactory conclusion to a particular problem.

Referrals

Referrals are usually made via hospital or community health care professionals but anyone can contact the service directly.  Referrals may be made at the point of diagnosis or at any time during the illness.  Referrals can be made a number of times during the illness as the needs of the patient can change frequently.

How to find us

We are based within the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre, which is opposite the haematology and oncology unit at Peterborough City Hospital.
