Aims to improve the quality of life for patients and families facing a life threatening or life limiting illness.

We offer:

  • Advice and symptom control on physical symptoms such as pain, nausea, constipation and breathlessness
  • Emotional, spiritual and practical support for patients and their families
  • Support, advice and education to staff on all aspects of palliative care
  • Support with advance planning
  • Telephone advice

Palliative care

We treat any patient with advanced and progressive illness who has palliative care needs, regardless of diagnosis (this includes both cancer and non-cancer related illnesses). The palliative care consultant attends outpatient clinics at the Haematology / Oncology unit on Monday and Friday mornings.

  • Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm

  • Weekends & bank holidays, 9am-5pm

The Hinchingbrooke Specialist Palliative Care Team

Consists of 2 Palliative care Consultants and a team of 12 hospital and community based specialist palliative care nurses, who provide high quality and effective specialist palliative care to in-patients of Hinchingbrooke Hospital and residents of the Huntingdonshire area.

The team sees patients for individualised symptom control, complex psychosocial care, liaison with other palliative care services and end of life care for patients with life limiting disease.

We work in partnership with the referring health care professionals and the multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care but does not take over the patient’s care completely.

In the hospital staff visit patients on the wards and provide a weekly outpatient clinic.

Patients who need community palliative care at home are then referred to the community palliative care team once discharged from the hospital, for ongoing support.
