Joy O’Leary recently visited the Woodlands Centre with friends, Sandra, Martyn, Paula and Cara, to present a cheque for £2,000 in memory of her late husband, Richard.

Richard O’Leary was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer in August 2017 at the age of 53. Three rounds of chemotherapy were delivered at the Woodlands, which were unfortunately unsuccessful, prompting Richard and Joy to investigate an immunotherapy trial at the Sarah Cannon Institute in Harley Street.

Richard led a very active life, enjoying a variety of sporting activities. He was the Chairman of March Marlins Swimming Club and competed in National swimming competitions at senior level.

Richard sadly passed away in July this year and in recognition of the care and treatment he received, it was his wish that donations be made to The Woodlands Centre.

Joy said: “The team in the Woodlands Centre worked very closely with the Sarah Cannon Institute during the immunotherapy trial Richard took part in. Even when they were no longer responsible for Richard’s treatment they made time for us and were always there to help.

“Richard couldn’t praise the staff at the Woodlands Centre highly enough for the personal level of care they showed every time we visited”.

Julie Ingmire, Upper GI and HPB Cancer Nurse Specialist, received the cheque from Joy and said: “It is always sad that we receive many donations in memory of loved ones who have passed, however it is wonderful to know that Richard thought so highly of the care he received in The Woodlands Centre that he chose to leave his legacy to us.

“We are very grateful to his wife Joy and their friends; not only for the donation, but for taking the time to visit the centre and see some of the team who cared for Richard”.
