Generous staff, patients and visitors at Hinchingbrooke Hospital have been enjoying the sweet taste of fundraising success by baking and buying cakes to help boost charity coffers.
As part of the UK’s Wear It Pink day to raise awareness of breast cancer, staff from the Trust have raised around £500 from the event to date – with more donations expected throughout the rest of the month.
Co-ordinating the day as part of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month was radiology department medical imaging secretary Helen Smith, herself a breast cancer survivor.
Helen said: “This is a cause very close to my heart, having been treated for breast cancer myself at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.
“I was diagnosed in 2014 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thankfully it saved my life.
“Several of my colleagues have been, or are being treated, for breast cancer and last year we sadly lost a dear colleague to this dreadful disease.
“However, treatment is improving all the time, but funding is needed for research to improve every patient’s experience to increase chances of survival. A very big thank you to colleagues who have helped organise the day and all staff, patients and visitors who supported our efforts.
“It was a fantastic day and was so nice to meet staff who came from other departments who we would normally never see.”
Money raised from Wear It Pink will be donated to the Breast Cancer Now charity, which says that in the UK each year, 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer – that is one every 10 minutes.
The advice from Breast Cancer Now is to be aware of any changes in the breast and to contact your GP to get any new or unusual changes checked.
