New Dialysis Unit officially opened at Peterborough City Hospital

Official Opening of the Chandra Mistry Dialysis Unit

Patient with nurse on renal unit

Leicester’s Hospitals’ renal and transplant service is officially opening a new haemodialysis unit in Peterborough on Wednesday 26 April. The new unit will be opened by the actor Jimi Mistry, alongside Dr Chandra Mistry after whom the Unit is named, and Jimi’s wife, Flavia Cacace, professional dancer on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The name was chosen in recognition of retired Dr Mistry who worked at the former Peterborough District Hospital for over 20 years and is an international pioneer in the world of dialysis.

The new purpose- built unit opened its doors to the first patients in January and is run by North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with Leicester’s Hospitals. Members of the Executive Team from North West Anglia will be attending the opening alongside Leicester’s Hospitals’ Non-Executive Director Colonel (retired) Ian Crowe and key members of the Leicester Renal Service.

Dr Chandra Mistry said: “I feel proud and honoured to have the unit named after myself and am very glad we are now able to dialyse Peterborough patients nearer to home.”

Geraldine Ward, General Manager for Leicester Renal Service, said: “The new unit will enable our patients in the Peterborough area to reduce their travel times and we are delighted to be having an official opening. The unit provides patients with an excellent environment with facilities closer to home.

Christopher Chalmers, a patient who uses the new unit, added: “The unit has reduced my travel time from a 45 minute journey each way, three times per week to a ten minute journey each way.”

The unit is located adjacent to the City Hospital, creating 10 additional dialysis stations, enabling more dialysis patients to receive treatment locally and preventing the need to travel to neighbouring hospitals.
