From a magician and a Disney Princess to dancing in the corridors and a visit from furry friends – young patients have been enjoying Peterborough’s Play in Hospital Week.

A week-long series of entertaining, fun and hands-on activities were enjoyed by young patients, their families and staff at Peterborough City Hospital’s Amazon Ward.

Promoting the importance of fun activities and play in the treatment of children was the aim of the week, held in hospitals across the UK to focus on the importance of play as a tool for resilience, and to promote good mental health.

Amazon ward welcomed a series of special guests; including Bailey and Bran from the Therapy Dogs Nationwide Charity, Freddie the Magician, Frozen’s ‘Elsa’ and a group of Btec dance students from Peterborough College.

A key feature of the week was the ward’s playroom, where children were encouraged to use arts and crafts to help familiarise themselves with equipment used in medical procedures.

Patients were invited to get creative through activity and art projects, thanks to a donation of materials from the Starlight Charity, which support play teams across the UK.

Amazon ward Play Specialist Georgia Allen said: “We had such a fabulous week with support from so many different groups and individuals.

“Play is a crucial element in achieving the best outcomes for young patients, and is used as to comfort and to reduce anxiety within the hospital setting, which for many can be daunting.”

Peterborough’s Lush store provided hand massages and product demonstrations for staff and children and there was even some Disney style magic as Frozen’s Elsa come in from the cold to meet and greet children on the ward and in outpatients, thanks to Emily from Darling Princess Parties.

Georgia added: “Our huge thanks to everyone who supported us during the week – the patients, and the staff, really enjoyed being part of such a brilliant initiative.”
