A five-year-old girl has raised an amazing £1,170 for Hinchingbrooke Hospital after being inspired by Captain Tom’s incredible achievement.
Zoe Houston was inspired by Captain Tom’s heroic fundraising for the NHS and wanted to emulate him and raise funds for her local hospital.
Zoe, who was born at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, expressed that she wanted to raise funds for the children on Holly Ward and the Special Care Baby Unit, to her mum, Sarah Hellary. Between them they came up with the idea of creating a Story time page on Facebook, where Zoe would read twenty-five of her favourite books for any children currently in hospital.
Zoe said: “I wanted to get some money like Captain Tom to help the children and babies at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. I thought the children won’t be getting visitors because the coronavirus is around and so I thought it would be nice for them to get to see some of my stories. It would be nice for them to have some new books and toys too!”
After smashing the initial fundraising target of £250, Zoe has currently raised over £1,100, on her JustGiving page, by delighting viewers by reading stories such as “The Little Zebra Who Lost His Stripes” and “The Hungry Caterpillar”. Zoe is not yet finished and still has some stories to read to finish her fundraising challenge.
Sarah Hughes, Lead Nurse for Children’s and Neonatal Services at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, said: “It is completely heart-warming to witness someone so young, be so driven to help others. We are so grateful for the support given to us by Zoe, her idea for this fundraiser is fantastic and I have enjoyed hearing some of her favourite stories.”
