Healthcare Science Week (10 — 16 March 2025) is our chance to showcase the vital role of science and technology in patient care at our Trust.
The brings together over 50 scientific specialisms and professional groups to celebrate and raise awareness of our diverse workforce. Healthcare science plays a vital role in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease and the health of our population. Healthcare Science Week is an opportunity to showcase this work and inspire the scientific workforce of the future.
Throughout this week, we will be highlighting some of the amazing members of Team North West Anglia who work in Healthcare Science Disciplines.
Healthcare Science Week: Meet Andy, Head of Respiratory Investigations
Here at North West Anglia, I lead a team of 9 Healthcare Scientists/Respiratory Physiologists across 4 sites with an upcoming clinical diagnostic centre.
Respiratory physiologists diagnose and treat patients with lung disease and breathing difficulties, including asthma and cystic fibrosis. Patients may be referred from other departments, including cardiology, thoracic surgery, or clinical oncology, so their fitness for surgery or treatment can be assessed.
This is performed by the team taking patients though a mixture of routine and advanced diagnostics. These diagnostic tests look at the functionality of a patient’s airways and lung tissue to help identify any abnormalities in air flow, gaseous exchange in the tissues, and lung size. These tests along with other services such as diagnostic imaging help consultants and clinicians have a complete picture of a patient’s lung condition. The tests performed are vital for a patients journey from diagnosis of specific lung conditions, surgical and treatment pathways and longer-term monitoring of specific respiratory conditions.
