Without our porters our hospitals would grind to a halt! They are constantly on the move around our hospitals, often clocking up over 10 miles a day in their roles – which is to transport patients and equipment within our buildings.
They are experts at navigating the quickest route around the network of corridors on our hospital sites and are hugely appreciated by the clinical teams they support.
Our large portering team at Peterborough City Hospital is employed by our service provider partner Medirest, while the smaller team at Hinchingbrooke Hospital are employed by the Trust. During the pandemic, the teams have worked even harder to reassure patients and keep them safe. They have had to adjust to mask wearing and extra sanitising, and in some cases wearing full PPE, as they carry out their duties, which has included entering wards where patients are being treated for Covid-19. We are grateful that, as usual, they have embraced this positively and professionally.
Mandy Richardson, Soft FM Manager for the Trust said: “The porters have responded positively to the challenges of wearing PPE whilst walking many miles as they assist our patients during their moves around the various hospital sites. They have overcome the challenges of communicating with our patients whilst wearing PPE and ensured they have provided their service with dignity and care.”
Thank you to our porters for their great response to the Covid-19 pandemic and for being behind-the-scenes heroes who have helped keep our hospitals running smoothly.
