About our services
The Paediatric Assessment Unit provides a comprehensive paediatric service both for elective and emergency care for all children up to the age of 17.

We are open daily from  8.30am to 9pm, 365 days a year, providing high quality, evidence based care in a child and family friendly environment.

The unit is a modern and spacious environment with 4 beds and a small play area.  This is a short stay admission area, maximum of 6 hours. 

If your child is unwell you may be referred in by your GP, midwife or through the Emergency Department at Hinchingbrooke.

The assessment unit also see children for elective medical procedures and for review post discharge if required.

Our staff
The service is staffed by a team of experienced registered sick children’s nurses   who are supported by a  health-care support workers  There is a specialist hospital play team,. The medical team is led by an experienced group of Consultant Paediatricians who have diverse skills and expertise.

Facilities  
Children will be assessed by the nursing and medical teams and a decision made about treatment options.  During this time parent’s can access the parent’s sitting room with microwave and facilities to make beverages.

Mobile phones
Mobile phones are allowed to be used on Holly Ward; however we do ask that you respect children and their families in neighbouring areas as calls can disturb patients and their families. 

  • Phones should therefore be used with consideration to others, we suggest they are switched to silent or vibrate. 

How to find us

The nearest car park is Car Park 3, near Children’s Outpatients. Come through this entrance and look for signs to the Paediatric Assessment Unit.  Alternatively parking is available in the main car park and Paediatric Assessment Unit is signposted from the main entrance.  There is a video buzzer on the entrance to the ward and when answered you will be let through where you need to report to our receptionist.  Please be vigilant for tailgating and do not let other on and off the ward.

Mealtimes

We are able to offer sandwiches and snacks e.g crudites and fruit, if you child is on the unit during mealtimes.

Visiting times

Parents or carers are able to accompany their child to the assessment unit, we request a maximum of two parents/carers at any one time.  If your child is admitted to Holly ward visiting times can be found on the Holly page.      

Additional information

Security

Keeping children and families safe is paramount.  We operate video entry access for getting in and out of the ward. 

Providing consent

Consent must be obtained prior to your child undergoing any procedure or treatment during their visit to hospital. 

Tablets and medications

It is very important that your child continues to take any prescribed medications until a medical person tells them otherwise. Please discuss with your doctor at admission any medication that your child is taking, including homeopathic and over the counter remedies. 

Any medications that are brought in for your child need to be given to the nurse. She will lock them away and return them to you when your child needs them.
