How pregnancy tests work
All pregnancy tests — no matter the brand or the price — measure the same thing: a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin), which your body produces in early pregnancy.
You can take a test from the first day of your missed period. Waiting until then gives the most accurate result.
Are some tests better than others?
No. All pregnancy tests sold in the UK must meet the same safety and accuracy standards.
Do I need to see my GP?
You don't need to see a GP to confirm your pregnancy. A home pregnancy test is enough.

Once you have confirmed your pregnancy, your next step is to decide which hospital or maternity service you want to receive your care from. This is the service you will self‑refer to.
