On September 25 it is World Pharmacist Day, and we will be celebrating the vital contribution made by Team North West Anglia's incredible Pharmacists.
Pharmacists are an integral part of our health-care system, and they play a vital role in ensuring you receive the most appropriate care to meet your medical need. Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for health advice, and they play a key role in supporting a wide variety of areas across our hospital sites, they do this by:
We are extremely proud of our pharmacists and so thankful for their hard work. You can meet some of our pharmacists below and learn more about their role at the Trust:
Why did you want to become a Pharmacist?
I wanted to make a difference to people’s health and their quality of life as a consequence. Use of medicines is the biggest intervention in healthcare and I wanted to play a part in shaping how medicines are used.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Being able to investigate issues and problem-solve and provide practical solutions which the patient/carer and clinician are happy with.
How does your role support patients and our local community?
I help to answer queries regarding drug use in pregnancy and breastfeeding, at the point of need and also before the need arises through the development and review of guidelines. I’m involved in supporting medicines use in pregnancy to protect both the mother and the baby e.g. aspirin for reducing risk of pre-eclampsia and/or fetal growth restriction, vaccinations (flu, whooping cough, RSV). This includes working out the most accessible way to deliver these medicines, including through community clinics, and the logistics that entails. I have been involved in considering alternative methods of administration of medicines for example to accommodate administration in school or while on holiday or to neurodiverse patients etc. This often involves making sure the parents/carers including teachers are aware and trained in the alternative method of administration.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to become a Pharmacist?
Go for it if you want a fulfilling and rewarding career, you may not become a millionaire but you can impact and save millions of lives. There’s a lot of variety within pharmacy, be willing to explore.
