Hinchingbrooke CT scanner first of its kind in the UK

Staff at Hinchingbrooke Hospital have recently taken delivery of a state-of-the-art CT scanner - the first in the country of this particular model that offers advanced cardiovascular imaging.

The new piece of equipment, called the GE Vibe scanner, is a next generation, AI-powered CT scanner that delivers high-resolution, low-dose scans in a single heartbeat, allowing for scanning to take place without the use of drugs called beta blockers which are typically required to slow down a patient's heart rate to obtain clear imaging.

Emily Taylor Neale, Principal Operational CT Radiographer at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust which runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital, said: “Our imaging team at Hinchingbrooke carried out 27,048 CT scans last year, illustrating just how vital CT scanning is. This fantastic new CT scanner will streamline the way we work, enabling us to see more patients and hopefully reduce waiting times. Overall, it will very much improve patient experience.”

Funding for the new model was provided through the Fit for the Future NHS England programme and allows the hospital to replace its previous scanner which was 11 years old.
