Welcome to our Children's Services Landing page! This page will help you find all the information relevant to the children’s services offered across our trust.
Our Trust provides comprehensive children’s service both for elective, and emergency care, treating all children primarily up to the age of 16. Our highly trained staff are committed to quality care for Babies, children and young people.
Amazon Ward is a 30 bedded unit. This includes 2 high-dependency care beds and 8 day-surgery beds. The ward provides emergency medical care alongside specialist surgeries.
We understand that a child's stay in hospital can be distressing and difficult for most families. One parent or carer is allowed to stay overnight and there are facilities to sleep by the child's bed. There is also a parent’s sitting room with a microwave and facilities to make beverages, as well as a TV and information board. If your child is admitted to high dependency, there is a bedroom on site for parent use. The ward also has a breastfeeding room and baby changing facilities.
Unfortunately, we can’t provide any meals for parents and visitors. You can bring a packed lunch with you and a fridge where you can keep it cool. In the hospital main atrium there is a WHSmith, a Costa coffee and a Deli Marché. The restaurant is on level one, in core A. There is also a coffee shop and convenience store in the women's and children’s atrium.
Children are referred to this unit by their GP or the Emergency Department and are assessed by a paediatrician and registered children’s nurse prior to being discharged home or admitted to Amazon Ward. Children with open access can also attend this unit, but please make sure to contact us prior to your visit so that we can expect you and make the necessary preparations. Due to the size of this ward, we recommend that patients siblings do not accompany parents on visits. If you have any concerns, please call the ward.
The Rainforest Outpatients Department is for children who do not have to stay with us overight and is used by paediatricians, physiotherapists, dieticians and by visiting specialist consultants (paediatric surgeons, cardiologists, rheumatologists and paediatric neurology specialists).
