Haematology and Oncology

Oncology treats cancers of the solid organs with chemotherapy, either intravenously or orally. Haematology treats cancers of the blood as well as non-cancerous blood disorders with a combination of oral chemotherapy and blood products.

Our dedicated Cancer Treatment Unit cares for haematology and oncology patients. As an inpatient, you will be allocated your own a nurse who will ensure you receive support, information and advice throughout your treatment.

Our Oncology ward has 18 beds where you will receive treatment from specialist Oncology nurses. The unit also includes facilities for teenagers and young adults.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of anti-cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells or make them less active. If you are having chemotherapy and feel unwell call 01733 678701 - this is a 24-hr open access line.

The type of chemotherapy treatment you are given depends on the type of cancer you have, where it started in your body, and whether it has spread to other parts of your body.

Chemotherapy may be used on its own or with other types of treatment such as surgery, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapies, or a combination of these.
