About Our Service

The Unit is part of the East Midlands Renal Network.

Kidney transplantation and acute dialysis services are provided by UHL in Leicester General Hospital. UHL also runs the dialysis unit here and provides specialist-nursing support for people who have home dialysis.

We run a kidney transplant follow-up clinic and provide routine Peritoneal Dialysis care for inpatients.

Outpatient services:
Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time and bring a list of all medications you are taking to every clinic appointment.

As well as measuring your height, weight and blood pressure, after your consultation we may also organise a number of tests. These are required to diagnose your condition so we can develop a treatment plan for you.

Tests may include:

  • a urine sample - this will be tested for blood and protein, which can be indicators of kidney problems
  • blood tests - blood samples will be taken by one of our phlebotomists (located in the main outpatient department). These are necessary to confirm the presence and severity of kidney disease, and indicate the potential cause
  • kidney scan - this will be arranged in the weeks following clinic. A kidney scan can help us assess the size of your kidneys, whether any blockages, stones or scarring are present and whether their blood supply is adequate.
  • kidney biopsy – a small minority of patients require a kidney biopsy once other test results are available. If required, your kidney specialist will discuss this with you.
