Progress is continuing with the redevelopment of Hinchingbrooke Hospital, with the demolition of a building, formerly used as a nursery, now complete. This demolition paves the way for new staff accommodation on the site which is being designed and installed by Zed Pods Ltd.
The Old Nursery building was located between two car parks at the front of the hospital site and was previously used for storage. Demolition work began in early December and is now complete with the new staff accommodation due to be installed by Spring 2027.
The new staff accommodation, funded through the New Hospital Programme, will provide a home-from-home for medical, nursing and other students on placement at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, on-call teams and overseas staff in their first three months of employment. In total 85 bed spaces will be provided, with accessible accommodation for those who may need it, improved wi-fi facilities for students to support their learning and a courtyard space to support wellbeing.

Deborah Lee, Senior Responsible Officer for the Hinchingbrooke Redevelopment, said: “This is a major milestone in our redevelopment journey and marks an important step for the New Hospital Programme. We are very excited to be working with local supplier, Zed Pods Ltd to create sustainable and homely environments for our staff to stay in. In turn, this will enable the demolition of our existing staff accommodation blocks at the back of our hospital site and create the space we need for our new hospital."
Tom Northway, Chairman of Zed Pods Ltd, said: “We are proud to work again with the Trust to deliver much needed, sustainable staff accommodation. This scheme demonstrates how modular construction can rapidly provide comfortable, low-carbon homes that support NHS staff wellbeing while helping unlock complex underutilised sites for development.”

Notes to editors:
- Hinchingbrooke Hospital was built in 1983 and is one of four hospitals in the East of England affected by structural issues relating to the concrete panels used in the construction of some of the walls and roof. These panels, called Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) were reviewed is a site-wide survey carried out by structural engineers when the issue first came to light. Remedial actions were taken where any faults were detected to ensure the buildings were safe to be used and completed in May 2023. An ongoing annual review and mitigation work will continue to maintain safety standards.
- In May 2023 the Government announced that Hinchingbrooke Hospital was added to the New Hospital Programme. The redevelopment programme, named Hinchingbrooke Hospital: The Next Chapter, is dedicated to building a new hospital on our site.
