NHS crew sleeps out to raise money for veterans

Patients and visitors at Peterborough City Hospital on the evening of Friday 13 March  should keep their eyes peeled for NHS colleagues pitching tents outside the hospital as night falls.

This isn't a protest, or a camping event, it is a show of support for veterans who find themselves homeless - something that the Great Tommy Sleep Out 2026 is aiming to change.

The aim is for supporters to raise sponsorship by spending one night in the cold to raise awareness and vital funds to provide safe homes, mental health support and a pathway back to independence for those who once served their country.

Four member of the local NHS will be sleeping under the stars - one even foregoing a tent to really experience what it is like to have just a cardboard box for shelter.

Make sure you stop and offer support to Greater Peterborough Network paramedics Rob McCormick and Graham Hillman along with Kelly Thompson, a paramedic with the of East of England Ambulance Service and our own Sarah Ferguson, Target Operating Model Director, as they bed down for the night.

Rob said: "As a member of the RAF Reserves for 12 years and working as a civilian in the Ministry of Defence before I became a paramedic, I feel like I have worked with service people all my life. I would hate to think that any of my colleagues would have ended up homeless but sadly thousands of veterans right here in the UK are facing the harsh reality of sleeping rough.

"We are pleased to be camping at PCH - please do drop by and say hello. Every pound we raise will go directly to Royal British Veterans Enterprise, helping provide safe homes, mental health support, employment opportunities, and a community of veterans who support each other."
