Disability groups give seal of approval to Changing Places facility
Disabled people from across Peterborough have checked out a newly constructed Changing Places toilet at Peterborough City Hospital as part of an opening ceremony event.
They gave their seal of approval to the specially-equipped room, describing it as an important step forward in ensuring disabled people can access healthcare facilities with dignity, privacy and confidence.
The new facility was officially opened by Matt Howard, a disabled volunteer at the hospital who regularly transports medications from the pharmacy across the site. It will make a significant difference to him personally, enabling him to volunteer for longer periods and continue supporting patients and staff throughout the day.Matt was joined at the opening by representatives from the Little Miracles charity, Shine and Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services (PCVS), who all praised the hospital's commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for patients, visitors, volunteers and staff.
Changing Places toilets are designed for people with complex disabilities and their carers who need more space and specialist equipment than is available in standard accessible toilets. The facilities typically include a height-adjustable changing bench, a ceiling hoist, additional circulation space, a privacy screen and a centrally positioned toilet.
Without access to these facilities, many disabled people can find it difficult, uncomfortable or impossible to spend extended periods away from home. In some cases, individuals may be forced to cut visits short or avoid travelling altogether.
The need for improved facilities for disabled people at Peterborough City Hospital has been championed by Michelle King, CEO of Little Miracles Charity and the Chairperson of the Peterborough Disability Forum. She said: “We were so pleased to hear the work had been completed to create this important space. It is amazing and we are thrilled to have been asked to see it for ourselves.
“I know how difficult and undignified it is to have to change my son on the floor of a standard disabled toilet, so this is a welcome improvement.”
Chris Todd, Director of Estates and Facilities at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City Hospital, said: “We are delighted to open this Changing Places facility and are grateful to our volunteer Matt for officially opening it on behalf of the disabled community.
“Access to appropriate facilities is not a luxury; it is essential for equality, dignity and inclusion. We were pleased to welcome local disability organisations and community partners to see first-hand the difference this facility will make to so many people.”
The Trust worked closely with stakeholders to ensure the facility meets the needs of those who will use it, helping to remove barriers that disabled people often face when accessing public toilet facilities.

The new Changing Places facility is now open and available for use 24 hours a day and is accessible via the Main Atrium at Peterborough City Hospital.
