Getting a good night's sleep in hospital can be challenging. We know that noise on wards can sometimes make it difficult to rest, and patient feedback and Care Quality Commission (CQC) National Inpatient Surveys have highlighted this as an important issue for our patients .
To help improve patients' experience, our hospitals introduced the Silent Night Charter in February 2023. The Charter reflects our commitment to protecting patients' sleep and rest whenever possible during their stay.
A good night's sleep can help with:
- Physical healing
- Mental wellbeing
- Maintaining medical stability
- Faster recovery
While hospital wards cannot be completely silent and we recognise sleeping in a hospital is not the same as being in your own bed at home , we have introduced measures to create a calmer and more restful environment for everyone.
If you are a patient or visitor in our hospitals, then you can help by please:
- Keeping noise low and using headphones where possible.
- Turning down the volume on mobile phones, tablets, televisions and other devices.
- Using night mode and dimming screens to reduce light disturbance.
- Being mindful that other patients may have different sleep routines and care needs.
- Asking a member of staff for a sleep pack, which includes an eye mask and earplugs to support rest. Nearly 50,000 patients have supported with sleep packs in our hospitals which has been supported by both our Trust Charity and Volunteers.
Baskets of sleep packs will be available on wards, which will be given out after during tea rounds.
- Our staff will do their best to support your usual sleep routine while ensuring all patients receive the care they need throughout the night.
