A major step forward in the redevelopment of Hinchingbrooke Hospital is underway, as local people are invited to help design the future of healthcare in Huntingdonshire.
North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust has launched a wide-reaching public engagement initiative, giving communities the opportunity to influence plans for a brand-new Hinchingbrooke Hospital, which will transform care for decades to come.
Hinchingbrooke is one of seven hospitals across England set to be rebuilt due to Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC). The scheme forms part of the national New Hospital Programme, with the new hospital expected to open by the end of 2032.
The redevelopment will create a modern, digitally enabled hospital built to the latest NHS standards, including single rooms for every inpatient. Key services, including a full Emergency Department and maternity care, will remain on site, ensuring Hinchingbrooke continues to serve as a vital hub for local healthcare.
While core elements of the programme are confirmed, there remains real opportunity for the public to shape how the new hospital looks, feels and operates.
The Trust is inviting feedback on three key areas:
- How patients, visitors and staff arrive at and move around the hospital site
- What the future care experience should feel like, including the use of single rooms and digital technology
- How the wider hospital site can support community life and wellbeing
The engagement runs from today through to the 16th August 2026, with multiple ways to take part.
Residents can complete a short online survey in around five minutes, alongside attending in-person sessions, focus groups and community pop-up events designed to ensure everyone has a voice.
Deborah Lee, Senior Responsible Officer for the Hinchingbrooke Hospital Redevelopment Programme, said: “Hinchingbrooke Hospital has been at the heart of local life for more than 40 years, and this is a once-in-a-generation chance to build a hospital fit for the decades ahead. Some things are settled. We are building a new hospital, on this site, with a single room for every inpatient, but a great deal is still genuinely open, and that is where local people come in. These are the things you can help us get right and we are asking you to help us write the next chapter.”
