Trust consultant represents Britain in European triathlon championships

Local Trust consultant will be putting his best foot forward in the coming months as he takes on his greatest sporting challenge to date.

David, who works as an Acute Medicine Consultant and Lead Physician at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, will be taking on the EuropeanMan wearing cycling gear standing next to a pedal bike and holding a medal Championship triathlon and representing Great Britain in the 45- 49 age category this month in Istanbul following qualifying at the Bournemouth Triathlon last year.

He said: “Last year, I set myself the goal of qualifying for GB in my age group and entered lots of qualifying events. I knew I needed to finish in the top 4 in my age group to automatically qualify so I trained hard. Sadly, I didn’t finish in the top 4. I was ready to try again the next year. Then I received good news. Some of those who finished ahead of me were unable to attend the races abroad, and my time was within the threshold of the winner’s finish time, so I was offered a place.”

Typically, David trains for 6-7 hours a week, splitting his training as evenly as possible and fitting it around his family life and his busy role in the hospital.

He will be swimming in the Bosphorus Strait and then biking across the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge before the running across the streets of Istanbul, racing through locations steeped in the history of the Ottoman and Byzantine eras.

He added: “I am immensely proud to be able to represent GBR in my age-group. This is a goal I was not sure was within my reach. I am also very nervous about being able to compete with athletes from around Europe and the World. I really hope I don’t come last!”

Regardless of the outcome in Istanbul, David will be back training for his next big triathlon challenge when he enters the World Championships in Wollongong, Australia in October.
