Today is Pharmacy Technician Day, which is an annual day dedicated to recognising the hard work and commitment of pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy technicians are essential healthcare practitioners who are integral to achieving optimal patient care outcomes. We are extremely thankful for all of our Pharmacy Technicians, who play a vital role in the delivery of the best possible care to our patients.
We have so many talented Pharmacy Technicians at North West Anglia and Olivia Musson is just one of them. She is currently on secondment with NHS England and the General Pharmaceutical Council as the National Pharmacy Technician Fellow for 2025/2026—a fantastic achievement that reflects the calibre and ambition within our team. Olivia has shared with us why Pharmacy Technician Day is such an important day:
"Pharmacy Technician Day is a special day to celebrate the amazing work of pharmacy technicians nationally. Our role is often not fully understood however pharmacy technicians bring a huge skill mix to many healthcare settings. We are registered professionals, with protected titles who may work in many sectors including hospital, community, GP surgeries, justice settings, industry and many more. Within our North West Anglia pharmacy department, we have pharmacy technicians working in dispensaries, procurement, manufacturing, governance, homecare, clinical trials, clinical education and on the wards. We work alongside our pharmacist and pharmacy support worker colleagues to ensure medicines are being optimised and used safely across the trust.
"I’m very lucky to have had the opportunity to be appointed to a fellowship this year to be the national pharmacy technician fellow for 2025/2026. My fellowship is split between the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), the regulator for pharmacy, and the office of the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer (CPhO) within NHS England. This is the second year that the fellowship place has been available with NHSE, and the first year it has been a joint role with the GPhC and NHS. I’m very honoured to be showcasing the pharmacy technician role and being able to gain valuable experience and exposure to national decision-making forums and senior pharmacy leaders.
"So far, I have authored and had published a thematic review on hub and spoke dispensing models for the GPhC and have supported APTUK (our professional leadership body) with creating and publishing a pharmacy technician professional leadership strategy on behalf of NHSE CPhO pharmacy technician advisory forum. I have had the opportunity to speak at various national events about my fellowship and career to date and still have 7 months to go! I am very grateful to the pharmacy department for allowing me a year away for this secondment and look forward to returning with lots of ideas to help drive forward the development of the pharmacy technician role both within the trust but also nationally. With lots of legislation changes happening to support development of scope of practice, it’s a really exciting time to be a pharmacy technician so please use today to celebrate the amazing contributions pharmacy technicians bring to our trust and the wider healthcare setting. I’m certainly very proud of all of my pharmacy technicians within my teams for everything they do."
Thank you to all of our incredible Pharmacy Technicians!
