Project to build a new Hinchingbrooke Hospital confirmed

Message issued on behalf of Hannah Coffey, Chief Executive Officer:

Following the recent Government review of the New Hospitals Programme (NHP), we are pleased to confirm that Hinchingbrooke Hospital’s redevelopment has been included in wave 1 of the programme.

The new Government has been looking at all the hospital schemes within the NHP and assessing costs, timings and individual need, in order to prioritise each site. The results of this review were shared by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP in Parliament on Monday 20 January.

The scale of our structural issues caused by the use of RAAC in the walls and ceilings of the main building means we have been prioritised into wave 1 of the programme, with construction estimated to start in 2027/2028.

I am really pleased to be able to share this reassuring news with our patients, staff and local communities in and around Cambridgeshire. Safety is and will continue to be our main priority and we are working with NHP to understand what this means for our completion date. In the meantime, our Estates team have worked incredibly hard to ensure that safety measures have been implemented with additional structural supports and fail-safe installations and additional reviews of the site and work will continue while we build our new hospital.

The Project Team continues to work closely with NHP colleagues as we prepare to submit our Strategic Outline Case (SOC) to the New Hospitals Programme, as planned, later this year. Our focus remains upon planning a hospital that meets the future needs of our communities in Huntingdonshire and the surrounding areas and creating a hospital environment that is good for our staff, too.

Further information on our progress on the redevelopment of Hinchingbrooke is available on our Trust website here and we will update you as soon as we can on any further developments.
