Sustainability Focus: Tree Planting at Peterborough City Hospital

Tree planting at PCHStaff and their families gathered to plant 25 trees at Peterborough City Hospital (PCH) on Sunday 1 December, as part of a sustainability initiative to enhance the hospital’s green spaces while addressing the growing concerns around climate change.

The Ophthalmology Department at PCH are doing their bit to support sustainability and have a number of staff who have become Sustainability Champions. The group came up with an idea that involved tree planting – a project aptly named "Eye Patch".

Mr Pammal T Ashwin, Ophthalmology Consultant said: “As an eye department, we know that climate change is known to exacerbate a range of health issues, including eye conditions caused by increased exposure to pollutants and UV radiation. This is one of many reasons that the NHS has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.”

Events like this not only contribute to the NHS goal but also raise awareness about environmental health and patient care. From reducing waste to tree planting, our Trust is committed to making a difference for our patients and the planet.

The trees used in the planting were kindly supplied by NHS Forest.
